I completed the first portion of my 3 foot toss around the social level without having all the pieces in place. I decided to start by suggesting to a coworker that he and I go watch a playoff game on days off. He’s all for it. This is something that I’ve never done before even pre marriage and pre kids. Partly because I didn’t want to and partly because my wife and I spend equal amounts of time and effort into our housework and raising our kids so that when we do do anything social, it’s as a couple with other couples. The next part of this will be to figure out how and when and if my wife will be cool with it. This is literally new territory for me. I’m generally socially anxious and avoidant and just more comfortable not being around people and spending my time either alone or at home with family. But I don’t think I will be this time. It will be an opportunity to change my relationship to these feelings and the stories that create them and to test drive how far I’ve come over the last few years.
