I had a mini anxiety breakdown a couple of months ago and deleted a ton of apps from my phone including fb, instagram, and email. It was amaaazing how much more peaceful I felt after. I would intentionally check fb at night only and emails only on my computer. It freed up a lot of time for reading and connection.. Then I slowly added them back on and I find myself back where I started…Probably time to delete them again. Otherwise, I’ve noticed that my downtime and “doing” time blend together and then I either judge myself for not doing enough or for spending too much time in downtime (when in reality I’m not consciously “being” during that time anyway). So I have been Not judging myself for any of it and just being aware. And that feels much better. I do set a little timer on my phone and give myself permission to read for 30 minutes without distraction and I love it. Which doesn’t necessarily sound like downtime when I write it like that but to me it is lol.
I love how in tune you are with yourself. You really do listen to yourself. Also enjoy hearing you be aware of yourself. The timer is a great idea for down time. Great strategy and thanks for sharing that. I also give myself timeframes. I’ve been feeling into downtime more since we’ve discussed it and am using it more often which feels good. We are having some great wins around downtime. These things are subtle but they make a world of difference in the long run.
Down time. I do as Jane – combine the 2. I sit at my computer while I watch TV at night. I miss pieces of the show. I make a few mistakes on the computer. Then I beat myself up because I know I would have been more productive if I just turn off the tv. I need to schedule some real down time…..
Jennifer I’ve been using a timer on my phone, an hour of work without distraction and then 30 minutes of guilt free downtime with no distraction. Whether that’s watching a show, playing a game, or reading or whatever. That seems to help a lot. How’s it going for you?
